Neurofeedback / EEG Biofeedback
High Performance Neurofeedback® (HPN) is a type of brainwave-based biofeedback that has shown clinical efficacy in addressing the symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury* (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Post-Concussive Syndrome, Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit Issues (AD/HD), Headaches, Insomnia, and Compulsive Behavior. It is also used to enhance Peak Performance.
Although it may seem contradictory, HPN can be calming, energizing and mood lifting all at the same time. Head pain often dissipates quickly. Foggy thinking and confusion typically give way to clear thinking and a more even, elevated and less-reactive mood.
The number of sessions depends on the individual, their age, goals, and issues being addressed; severity and time since onset of symptoms are other factors. The typical range is from seven or fewer sessions to 20 or more. Clients typically notice an improvement within the first few sessions, though time and commitment to treatment are needed to make and sustain optimal treatment gains.
During a session the HPN system tracks the brainwaves (EEG) and delivers a tiny and imperceptible electromagnetic radio wave signal for a fraction of a second that results in changes toward a more highly functioning brainwave pattern. Neuroscientists believe the brain’s defenses against stressors and trauma create neural gridlock. HPN allows the brain to ‘reboot,’ thus restoring optimal functioning.
Unlike traditional Neurofeedback, in which you actively regulate your brainwaves, HPN is passive. Non-invasive electrodes are applied to your scalp and all you do is sit while your brain does the work. Your brain interacts with the signal on its own and self-corrects.
HPN is the integrative approach to neurofeedback and one of the most user friendly of neurofeedback systems, producing results. HPN more directly and rapidly ameliorates suffering and improves quality of life. HPN also improves brain function by optimizing and normalizing cell energy, neurotransmitters and blood flow. Clients report long-term improvements in mental clarity and cognitive function as well as diminished anxiety and depression.
An emerging legacy of the National Football League is a generation of retired players with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Accordingly, there is a need to develop treatments to reduce the morbidity associated with TBI, sustained by the retired NFL players during their playing careers. One treatment device that has made a positive difference is HPN.
HPN is FDA approved. HPN may be reimbursed as a form of biofeedback—check with your provider. Request a Fee Sheet from me with diagnosis and payment amount, to submit to your insurance.
Audio-Visual Entrainment uses flashes of light and/or audio to gently shift your brain into a different brainwave frequency. This is very useful to help wind down or perk up your brain. Schedule an office appointment today to try before you buy.
On a Personal Note, I’ve experienced all the treatment modalities I offer to Clients. One particularly memorable experience with HPN was driving home from the east to west coast of Florida after being treated to a session by the inventor of the device. Because my brain was so highly focused, everything was incredibly fascinating along the way… it took me a couple extra hours to make it home.
* Traumatic Brain Injury FACTS:
- Traumatic Brain Injury causes 20 times more disabilities than AIDS, Breast Cancer, Spinal Cord Injuries and Multiple Sclerosis combined.
- Traumatic Brain Injuries have claimed more lives than all U.S. wars combined since 1977.
- Approximately 1.5 million Americans sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury each year.
- Traumatic Brain Injury is the number one cause of both death and disability in children and young adults.
Each year in America approximately 300,000 individuals are seen by Medical Doctors as a result of a blow to their head. Of that number, between 50,000 and 100,000 will have prolonged symptoms affecting their relationships and/or their abilities to work. (Brain Injury Association of America)
